How much does lawn care cost? If your lawn is patchy, mossy, or just tired, it probably needs scarification and overseeding. But working out lawn care prices is confusing because most companies charge for each component separately, and some will not tell you the lawn scarification cost until they have visited your garden.

This guide covers exactly what lawn care costs in South East London in 2026, including the real cost of lawn scarification, what each treatment involves, and why our all-in restoration package is better value than buying the components separately.

What Is Scarification and Why Does Your Lawn Need It?

Over time, a thick layer of dead moss and thatch builds up on top of your lawn. You cannot see it because it sits just below the grass blades. This layer stops water and nutrients getting through to the roots, which is why the grass looks thin, patchy, and tired. Understanding what lawn scarification is helps explain the lawn care cost.

Scarification is the process of mechanically removing this layer using a specialist electric scarifier. Even a small lawn produces a surprising amount of material. Once the thatch is removed, the lawn can breathe again.

After scarification, overseeding fills in the thin and bare patches with new grass seed. A professional seed spreader gives even, consistent coverage across the whole lawn, with a double pass on bare patches for thicker growth.

The vast majority of lawns we see across South East London have never been properly scarified. One professional restoration session can completely transform a lawn that has looked tired for years.

Replacing a Lawn vs Restoring It

Most people think their tired lawn needs ripping up and replacing. It almost never does. A professional restoration works with what you already have and creates a lush, thick lawn at a fraction of the cost.

Can I Scarify My Lawn Myself?

You can buy or hire a scarifier and do it yourself. The lawn scarification cost for DIY is lower upfront, but there are a few reasons professional lawn care produces consistently better results.

The scarifier makes the biggest difference. A professional electric scarifier removes far more thatch than a manual rake or a cheap consumer model. The amount of material that comes out of even a small lawn is surprising. Consumer-grade tools just scratch the surface.

Even seed distribution matters. A professional seed spreader gives consistent coverage across the whole lawn. Hand-spreading results in clumps and bare spots that show up weeks later when the grass grows in unevenly.

The knowledge matters too. Knowing how short to mow before scarifying, how to rake bare patches to loosen the soil for germination, and which seed to use for shady London gardens all contribute to the result.

One professional visit gives better results than a weekend of DIY. If you are going to spend money on grass seed anyway, getting it done properly the first time saves you repeating it next season.

Best Time for Lawn Restoration

You can book lawn restoration all year round. The grass seed we use germinates well in any season as long as you keep on top of the watering while it is establishing. You just need to make sure the lawn stays damp during germination, which takes a few weeks.

That said, the strongest results come from early spring (March to April) and late summer to early autumn (September to October) when soil temperatures are naturally right for germination and there is more rainfall to help. For the best possible lawn, book once in spring and once in early autumn. By the following year your lawn will look completely different.

The seed we use (Sprogs and Dogs) is specifically designed for households with children and pets, and it germinates well even in the shady conditions that are common across South East London gardens.

What Affects Lawn Care Costs?

Lawn size. This is the main factor affecting lawn care cost. Regular-sized lawns are £249, large lawns are £349. Very large gardens need a quote based on pictures.

Lawn condition. A lawn with heavy thatch and moss takes more passes with the scarifier, but this is included in the lawn care prices. You do not pay extra for a lawn in poor condition.

Grass seed. You can add grass seed when booking via our online calendar, or supply your own if you have a preference. We use Sprogs and Dogs by default.

Location. No travel charges anywhere in South East London. We cover 18 areas from Dulwich and Peckham to Bromley and Beckenham.

Lawn Care Prices - FAQ

  • How much does lawn scarification cost in the UK?

Scarification alone typically costs ~£120 depending on lawn size (Checkatrade, 2026). Overseeding is ~£160 on top of that (MyJobQuote). Our all-in restoration package including scarification, overseeding, and aftercare starts at £249 for a regular-sized lawn.

  • What is included in the £249 price?

Everything: preparation mow, electric scarification, debris clearance and hand raking, overseeding with professional seed spreader, watering in, and aftercare instructions. There are no hidden extras.

  • When is the best time to scarify a lawn?

The best times are early spring (March to April) and late summer to early autumn (September to October). You can book year-round, but these windows give the strongest results for seed germination and new growth.

  • Is professional lawn care worth the money compared to DIY?

Professional equipment makes a significant difference. An electric scarifier and professional seed spreader produce results that consumer-grade tools cannot match. The scarifier removes far more thatch than manual raking, and even seed distribution is critical for a consistent result.

  • How long until I see results?

New grass seed germinates within days. Your lawn needs a few weeks to reach first-mow height (around 8 to 10cm). For the best results, book once in spring and once in early autumn. By next year your lawn will look completely different.
